Abstract: A 13 page paper discussing the need for and structuring of a Student Assistance Program (SAP) in the school setting. There are many and varied programs available designed to help people of all ages deal with the stresses of life and focusing specifically on drug and alcohol abuse. Though many such programs exist, a feature common to most is that they are not well known in the communities they serve. Participation commonly is in the form of a "sentence" imposed by some civil authority, and many individuals already have lived most of their lives devoted to their specific addictions. Modeled on the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) model, the SAP works to accomplish identification and intervention much earlier, and on a voluntary basis in every case possible. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
